Mark’s Musings – January 9, 2019

For many people this is the first full week back to work, school, etc. Here’s hoping that your holiday went well and you were able to spend time with your loved ones. I think when you boil it all down and get past the boxes, packages and bows, that’s really a key to the holidays. Perhaps many use it as a time to reflect and gain new purpose – especially after Christmas is past. The New Year always brings resolutions and many resolve to lose weight, start exercising, and eat healthier meals and many other good for you intentions that tend to go awry as the month of January rolls on.

But don’t give up. Maybe you set a goal to exercise five days a week and you only completed three. That’s great! You did something for yourself. Keep going!

Eating healthy is the tougher one I think as the busyness of life has us going to and fro – and getting caught in the fast food drive thru. You can beat that with some better planning perhaps. Drag out the ol’ crockpot and throw some stuff in! Some potatoes, veggies and beef makes for a great home cooked meal. Yeh, I sound like I know what I’m talking about here don’t I? Fooled you, ha, ha – I don’t. But I’m blessed with a spouse that does – thank goodness – or Mark would either weigh 150 pounds or 300 pounds. The former from lack of eating and the latter from eating way wrong.

Many people probably make it to Super Bowl weekend with their eating healthier goal – okay – so let’s say you blow it on that one weekend – that’s okay, keep going! You can then make it to Valentine’s Day and then start again. So you have a “cheat day” every now and then – it’s cool.

Remember the old saying, “It’s not how many times you fall down but how many times you get back up”. That’s close I think.

The national championship game is tonight as I write this column. I’ll go out on a limb and predict Clemson over Alabama 35 to 27. I have not watched Alabama much this year and only a bit of Clemson but I think the Tigers are due to take down the Tide. Those are just my thoughts and we’ll see how it goes.

And by now most OSU fans know that UGA quarterback Justin Fields is transferring to the Scarlet and Gray. This is a huge boon for new head coach Ryan Day who also landed Zach Harrison, the top recruit from the state of Ohio. Day has already been quite successful in the recruiting arena which was always one of Urban Meyer’s strong suits. Switching sports, the Buckeye hardwood team gave the Spartans all they wanted on Saturday, having a decent lead only to lose by nine.

Do we dare even mention that ‘S’ word? So far we have been avoiding it like the plague but sooner or later the odds will catch up to us I imagine. Now, we all know that we need some ground coverage for a period of time which helps farmers and in the long run, all of us. If we could just figure out how to keep it off the roads but let the beauty cover the trees and enjoy it that way, life would be good.
