Update on storm damage reported in West Lafayette
WEST LAFAYETTE – Upon further evaluation of radar data and damage assessment by the Coshocton County EMA, the National Weather Service has determined that a downburst with winds in excess of 70 mph was the cause of extensive damage to a barn as well as other structures and trees along State Route 751 and County Road 9 on the evening of Feb. 7. No one was injured as a result of the wind damage.
A downburst is a strong ground-level wind system that emanates from a point source above and blows radially, that is, in straight lines in all directions from the point of contact at ground level.
On Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m., the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a possible tornado east of West Lafayette on State Route 751. The sheriff’s office responded to the location along with the West Lafayette Fire Department. Upon their arrival, they discovered extensive damage to an equipment barn as well as damage to three other buildings on the property. The Coshocton County EMA was notified about the damage at 6 p.m. and responded to location to assess the damage.
Coshocton County EMA staff returned to the location on the morning of Feb. 8 to further assess the damage. All information obtained by the EMA from visits to the locations as well as information from residents in the area was used by the NWS in the determination of the cause of the damage.
