Students encouraged to dress as characters from books

COSHOCTON – Some famous characters from books roamed the halls of Coshocton Elementary School on Friday, March 8.
“I dressed up as Captain Underpants because some of his jokes are funny,” said Zaxton Stanton, who is in the fifth grade.
As part of the school’s National Reading Month activities, students were encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character.
Miles Griffiths decided to be a Storm Trooper from “Star Wars” books.
“I like in the books when they are in space and fight,” said the second grader.
Fourth grader Brianna Fink dressed up as Laura Ingalls Wilder from “Little House on the Prairie.”
“I like the older times because they are always exciting and you don’t know what is going to happen,” she said.
Friday’s activity wrapped up a week of fun dress up themes that were based on different authors. Monday, March 4 was bright colored clothes day, which went along with author Eric Carle’s “The Very Quiet Cricket.” Hat day was Tuesday, March 5 in honor of Jan Brett’s “The Hat.” Wednesday, March 6 celebrated Dr. Seuss and his book, “Wacky Wednesday” with students being encouraged to wear their clothes inside out and backwards. Pajamas or comfy clothes day was Thursday, March 7 and the featured author was Audrey Wood and her book, “The Napping House.”
Every morning, information on the featured author was read. Teachers were provided with a link to a reading of each book or they could read it to their students. They also were encouraged to choose other books by the chosen author that fit their students’ needs.
The dress up days were held in connection with the school’s Pennies for Patients. Students paid $0.50 a day to dress up or $2 for the week.
The week of March 11-15, teachers were encouraged to visit other classrooms and read to different students. They also could read from their home and post a video of it on social media. A list of optional activities was provided for teachers to use to finish up their month-long celebration of National Reading Month.
