COSHOCTON – Mason Waycaster signed his letter of intent to play golf at the Ohio Valley University on Wednesday, April 3 at Coshocton High School. Waycaster played golf for two years at Coshocton after transferring from Ridgewood his junior year.

“We had two really good seasons,” said Waycaster. “We made it far my junior year, to districts and my senior year, we made it to state.”

Golf coach at Coshocton, Kevin Kittel, said that it meant a lot for Waycaster to come and play for Coshocton.

“He transferred from Ridgewood,” said Kittel. “His dad was the coach at Ridgewood and when he resigned, Mason said, I want to come and play for you, which meant a lot. His dad is an excellent golfer, so he had the physical attributes and a solid mentality for the game, and he really honed them in his junior and senior year.”

Waycaster will major in construction management at Ohio Valley.

“I just really wanted to play golf somewhere and I was offered to play golf at a really good place,” he said.

Waycaster didn’t start out by playing golf.

“Actually, he played football until he was about 12,” said Tom Waycaster, Mason’s father. “I talked him into playing golf.”

Mason is a four-year letterman and his two-year scoring average for Coshocton was 38.61 and 38.35. He was also first team ECOL and first team east district in 2017 and 2018. He was named ECOL Co-Player of the Year and East District Co-Player of the Year.

“Mason was a welcome addition to the golf team at Coshocton during his junior and senior year,” said Kittel. “He is an accomplished golfer who will do well at the next level. We all hope that Mason continues his success this fall at Ohio Valley University.”

Mason wants to thank his coaches, his teammates, and his parents for supporting him throughout the years, and Tom said he has enjoyed watching his son mature on the golf course.

“Growing into a man, golf does a lot to help with that, with the honesty and morale that comes with the game,” said Tom. “You also get to meet a lot of good people.”

Tom said he would like to wish Mason the best of luck the next four years.

“Give it 100 percent,” he said.
