Chester Melvin Green
FRESNO – Chester Melvin Green, age 92, of Fresno, OH, went to be with his Lord and savior Jesus Christ, April 6, 2019. He was born in Coshocton, OH on April 12, 1926 to the late Glen and Fern (Bassett) Green. He was a member of Renner’s United Church of Christ at Fresno and loved reading the Bible. Chester met his loving wife Janice in the summer of 1948 and he and Janice were married on October 30th, 1948.
Chester spent much of his youth growing up the mountains of North Carolina with his 9 siblings while his father worked road construction. Chester joined his father working road construction at age 17 as a water boy. He began operating heavy equipment on many road projects from 1946 to 1962. In 1962 he went to work for Peabody Coal Company in Coshocton, OH at the Broken Arrow mine as a dozer operator. He was shortly after promoted to the operator on the 8700 Marion drag line where he remained until the mine closure. After The closure of the Broken Arrow mine he transferred to Peabody’s Simco surface mine until he retired. Chester was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and United Mine workers of America. He was also a veteran of WW II and served state side as an ambulance driver, transporting wounded veterans.
Chester loved life and family, always greeting everyone with a big smile. He always looked forward to spending time with family and babysitting his grandchildren. Chester had many hobbies and enjoyed working with wood, hunting, fishing, gardening, oil painting and sculpting with clay.
In addition to his wife of 70 years, he is survived by their four children, Judy (Larry) Hunter of Warsaw, Joyce (Gary) Clark of N. Canton, Chester F. (Lisa) Green of Warsaw and Jill (Ty) Cobb of Ragersville; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and his siblings, Annie Hulvey of Florida, Louise Gordon of Akron, Betty Petty of Florida, Bob (Sue) Green and Louie (June) Green both of Navarre, and Larry (Tina) Green of New Philadelphia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill Green, Alvie Green and Avery Green.
Private family services will be held at Renner’s United Church of Christ with Pastor Jim Henninger officiating. Burial will be in the Halifax Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
