Children help with sunflower festival project
COSHOCTON – Giant sunflowers created fun little houses for children to play in at last year’s Coshocton Sunflower Festival. On May 26, children were invited to come help plants seeds to add to this area of the festival scheduled for Friday through Sunday, Aug. 16-18 at the Coshocton KOA.
“We had some of these hide and seek houses last year, but we decided to do even more of a kids’ area in the sunflower field,” said Ryan McPeek who runs the campground with his wife Camille. “They can have fun playing in them and know that they helped plant them. Most of the sunflowers are planted by machine, but these had to be planted by hand. We did it now because it takes them 70 to 80 days to bloom.”
The seven sunflower houses will be shaped like circles and include around 1,200 seeds. Three varieties were planted and they will grow 12 feet high.
The four children who participated in the activity got two of the houses planted and were able to name them. Five-year-olds Haylen Cramer and Easton Atwood of Newark named their house Flash. Six-year-old Sophia Sellers of Fresno and 4-year-old Beckham Sippel of Marysville chose to call theirs Unicorn Campsite Gateto.
The Coshocton Sunflower Festival features more than three acres and 20 varieties of sunflowers from two to 12 feet tall.
