Team Alana to host first golf outing
COSHOCTON – Enjoy a round of golf with good friends and support a good cause. Coshocton County Relay for Life Team Alana will be hosting a golf outing on Saturday, July 20 at Hickory Flats Golf Course. There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and a hog roast afterward in the pavilion on the back nine.
“We had done this last year through the committee and decided it would be easier to do it as a team event this year,” said Amber Goddard, lead chairperson. “We had five teams last year and we were able to break even. Luckily, a couple of teams donated their money back to us, so we had some profit.”
Entry fee for golfers is $60 per golfer and $240 per team of four. Golfers can register by calling Goddard at 740-610-7149 or Tracey Barnhouse at 740-509-0196. There is no deadline for golfers to register.
“I will take registration the day of the event,” said Goddard. “If they are willing to come and play and let us feed them, I will not turn anyone away.”
For $100, business sponsors can have their business name on a sign that is placed by each hole. The deadline for business sponsors is July 12. Contact Goddard or Barnhouse at the numbers above to sponsor a hole.
“We just want to promote awareness,” said Goddard. “Just to remind people that we’re out there all year long. This is not just a May event. We’re at it every day.”
First place will be awarded $400, second place, $200, and third place, $100. There will also be an optional skins game for $20 per team.
Team Alana was formed in 2007 after the passing of Goddard’s sister, Alana Branstetter, at age 16. The team hosts fundraisers throughout the year for Relay for Life including an 80s prom, Fools on the Roof, Christmas Festival of Trees, and a bluegrass music performance the third Saturday of every month at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites. They are planning to sell apparel this year.
Goddard said she never knew anything about Relay before Branstetter got sick. At first, her friends started a team at Coshocton High School in her honor. Since the team’s founding, the family has lost other family members and friends to cancer.
“I do it for them and for the survivors,” said Goddard. “I want them to know they are not fighting alone. It’s not just our team but the whole community supports our survivors.”
This year’s Relay for Life wrapped up on June 17 and their kick-off for next year will be in September at RHDD at 6 p.m. They meet the third Monday of the month and are always looking for new teams.
