COSHOCTON – Despite the rain clouds cast over the fairgrounds Wednesday, July 3, the Coshocton Freedom Celebration was in full swing. From fair food, to face painting and children’s games, to live music, the Independence Day festivities had a little bit of everything.

Near the commercial buildings, the Nazarene Church’s youth group had set up a variety of bouncy houses and inflatable games for kids. Church member Sharon Burns said that this was their first year running the booth, which was used as a fundraiser for the fair board.

Families, like Melanie and Lloyd Ridenbaugh, were arriving early to save their spot for the fireworks show at 10 p.m. The Ridenbaughs were attending the event with their two grandsons. They come to the Freedom Celebration almost every year and enjoy the fireworks and the games with their family.

Besides the standard fried fair food, there were several local booths showcasing their dishes to the attendees. The Coshocton Elks Lodge had their own tent where they were selling food. The women in charge of the tent, Darla Davis, Jackie Robinson, and Jennifer Milligan, had attended the Freedom Celebration before but this was the Elks Lodge’s first year participating.

Though most participant’s favorite part of the Fourth of July involved fireworks of some kind, Darlene Shryock said she most enjoyed Independence Day and remembering what it stands for. Shryock came from New Concord to visit her great-grandson and extended family for the holiday.
