Once again Coshocton County has proven that it is not the size of the community but the size of the commitment of that community. The annual United Way “Taste of Coshocton” event held last Thursday is another example of how our community pulls together – or was that pulled pork – ha, ha – heard there were some pretty good samples of that tasty treat on hand. You had the opportunity to learn about some folks in our community that maybe you didn’t know existed – or you had heard of them but have not had the chance to visit. Vendors from Coshocton, Newcastle, West Lafayette and even West Bedford joined in on the fun to raise monies for the United Way of Coshocton County. Nice job everyone.
This weekend is the annual bean dinner in Newcastle – on Sunday of course. The Sunflower Festival is this weekend and the folks in Bakersville just wrapped up their homecoming with tractor pulls and lots of barbecued chicken with all the fixin’s! There is still a lot to do before the end of summer!
As the majority of the summer activities and events around the community conclude for the summer you know what’s coming – SCHOOL!
Yep, starting next week those big yellow buses will be rolling down the highways and byways of Coshocton County – remember your driving lessons and let’s all watch out for the precious youngsters. Best wishes to all of the teachers, administrators, support staff, coaches, food service, bus drivers, maintenance personnel, janitorial staff and of course, the students. Here’s to a great year!
Could it be time to turn our attention to football? As the Indians just wrapped up a four game series with the Twins and are now tied for first in the American League central division perhaps we can take a slight detour towards the fall and some football.
We have to start with our local high school teams where the excitement is building towards another positive season across the county – opening games are on August 30. You can catch next week’s Beacon for the annual Football Preview. Good luck everyone!
And let’s not forget about soccer, cross country, golf, volleyball or marching band! It takes a tremendous amount of effort on the part of many, many people to make all of these happen. Thank you to everyone that contributes their time and talent for our young people to have the opportunity to participate in a school activity.
Do we dare bring up the Browns or the Buckeyes? This season marks the first one in a very, very long time that the expectations for both teams have been this high – especially the Browns. The predictions are, like most predictions, across the board. They range from making the Super Bowl to missing the playoffs altogether. Time will tell who is right but one thing is for certain, it should be an exciting fall in Cleveland.
The Buckeyes have a new quarterback and a new head coach in Ryan Day – and are expected to win most of their games – I said most. That game on Nov. 30 is the one that looms largest and has several prognosticators squirming in their seats. The opener against FAU on Aug. 31 – Buckeyes by 45.
