VFW to sponsor two nation-wide contests
COSHOCTON – The local VFW will again take part in the national Patriot’s Pen Contest and the Voice of Democracy Contest. Deadline for both contests is Oct. 31.
The Patriot’s Pen Contest is for students who are in sixth through eighth grade and gives students the opportunity to write an essay on a different theme each year. This year’s theme is “What Makes America Great”. The national winners of the contest will receive at least $500 with the first place winner receiving $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C.
Essays must be 300 to 400 words, no exceptions. Essays under or over this word limit will be eliminated. Poetry is not acceptable. Forms and more information may be picked up at your local school or at the local VFW Post.
The 2019 – 2020 Voice of Democracy theme is “What Makes America Great”. This contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12. Record your original three to five minute essay on an audio CD or a flash drive. Submit the recording, typed essay, and entry form to your school or the local VFW Post. Music, singing, poetry, or sound effects are not acceptable.
Prizes and scholarships can be awarded at the post, district, state, and national level department. State winners receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. in March 2020 where students will receive scholarships from the VFW and its auxiliary. Forms and more information may be picked up at your local school or at the local VFW Post.
