Brink adds national titles to his wrestling resume

COSHOCTON – Lucian Brink is always looking to better himself and he did just that this summer by adding national titles to his wrestling resume.
His first big event this summer was the Fargo National Freestyle Tournament. He attended a weeklong camp at Ohio Northern University before heading to Fargo, N.D. for three to four days of wrestling at the FargoDome. Brink qualified for the tournament by placing third at the state freestyle tournament.
“I fell a little short of what I wanted to do there, but it was a good experience,” he said. “Of the two kids I lost to, one was a freshman in college and the other was ranked 10th in the country. There were a couple thousand kids there and I only think three states that didn’t attend.”
After the Fargo, N.D. tournament he participated in the Junior Olympics, which were held in Greensboro, N.C.
“We had a weeklong camp and then left directly for Greensboro,” Brink said. “I had 13 matches by the end of the four days there. We were really successful as a team.”
His team earned silver and he took home two golds. His Fargo team also earned a silver coming in second to another team from Ohio.
Brink is very thankful for everyone who helped makes these trips possible.
“Our coach (at Coshocton) Sean Collins did a lot of work with me and he’ll do that with anyone who wants to get extra workouts in,” Brink said. “I have really good support from my family too.”
The community also was behind him.
“I had to do fundraising for both (trips) and I want to thank the Coshocton community in general for supporting me,” Brink said.
The Coshocton High School senior wrapped up his junior year with a state title and he is looking to repeat this year. Brink also believes the team as a whole can have another good year.
“We were pretty successful last year, but we lost a big senior crew,” he said. “We will be younger, but we have a lot of talented guys and I think we can accomplish a lot.”
Brink hopes to wrestle in college and his ultimate goal is to compete in the Olympics someday.
“At a young age I thought I was going to play soccer, but then I transitioned to wrestling and knew this is what I wanted to do,” he said. “My whole career I wanted to be a state champ and now I am, but I never settle.”
