It’s hard to believe that the Labor Day weekend – long recognized as the unofficial end to summer as we know it – is here. The last week of August signifies the first week of high school football, the first week of Buckeye football and the first full week of school for area youngsters which all happen this week. The first day of autumn is not until Sept. 23 but as we all know, when school starts summer pretty much comes to a screeching halt. Pools are emptied, the leaves are starting to turn, the crops are nearing maturity and we start thinking about fall campfires, preparing homes for the winter and yuck, that white stuff.
Hey, let’s not rush things shall we? Let’s slow down here a bit. We still have some enjoyable months ahead of us before we move headlong into that other season.
Fall does bring a lot of good stuff with it. Besides football, marching bands and the excitement that comes with playing under the lights on Friday night, many high school and younger athletes participate in cross country, soccer, golf or volleyball. Let’s wish all of our area athletes and coaches best wishes for a successful season. You can view the teams, schedules and rosters for many of the fall sports inside this issue of The Beacon. Marching bands will appear next week.
We can also talk about all the foods of fall – chili tops my list. With crackers, (and lots of butter on top), a side of a peanut butter sandwich – it doesn’t get much better than that. Actually, as I think about it, just about any kind of soup in the fall tops my list – potato, vegetable, the list goes on but those would be my top three choices.
The Tribe had the Twins right where they wanted them before blowing some games by leaving too many men on base – several bases loaded scenarios could have resulted in wins. Cleveland is three and a half games back in the division despite being up a half game in the wildcard race. You’re putting a lot of faith in a one game playoff unless you can take the division away from Minnesota – which is a very real possibility with six games remaining with the Twins.
The Reds and Pirates have had moments of triumph throughout the season – just not enough to make any headway in a very tough division. It looks like the Cubs will have to win the division to make the playoffs – as will the Cardinals depending on who wins the National League central.
Florida Atlantic invades the ‘Shoe this Saturday with a new coach and a new quarterback at the helm for the Buckeyes. It won’t matter for this game – the Buckeyes first real test will be against Nebraska. Indiana could field a bit of a challenge.
Our community is indeed blessed to have people like Marion Sutton and now Dan Erb at the helm of a longtime local manufacturer – Jones Metal. Local ownership is significant and here’s looking forward to many years of continued success and innovation for the company.
Plan now to attend the Ohio Means Jobs Coshocton County Employment Expo at the Lake Park Pavilion on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a terrific opportunity to visit with local employers that are hiring.
