New facility supports local families

| September 3, 2019

ZANESVILLE – On Saturday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m., the Muskingum Valley Council will officially re-open their renovated and expanded Scouting Resource Center. Located in the heart of Zanesville at 734 Moorehead Avenue, the beautiful new facility is built to serve scouting families and leaders for years to come. The public is invited to visit Saturday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for tours of the new facility.

US Representative Troy Balderson will make opening comments at 11 a.m., followed by the ribbon cutting and tours. Light refreshments will be available. Scout Troop 158 will be camping on the grounds and plans to prepare ‘Monkey Bread’ for guests who arrive for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Resource Center sits on 3.5 acres at the foot of the McIntire neighborhood. The scouts refer to the property as Camp Zane, where they host many activities and events throughout the year.  The new facility houses a training and conference center, Scout Store, and our program and support offices. The expansion added an additional training room, handicap accessibility, and large covered porches. A Program Utility Building was also added, allowing for storage of program equipment and supplies.

Executive Director Ed Mulholland explained the purpose of the new facility: “There are almost 3,000 scouts in our service area; their families need scout books, uniforms and outdoor gear.  Their leaders need training and information. This facility is a significant investment in the future of our community. Here, local scouting programs are developed and made available to leaders and parents. These scouting programs help build character, citizenship and leadership skills that our scouts will use to make Zanesville a great place to live and grow.”

While visiting Camp Zane, guests may also want to view the 20-foot wood carving representing the adult leader advanced training course known as Wood Badge, by chainsaw artist Michael Warren.

Persons interested in learning more about the grand re-opening or about scouting programs may contact Mulholland at the Muskingum Valley Council, BSA at 740-453-0571. The public is invited.
