Drowning reported in Newcomerstown

NEWCOMERSTOWN – On Sept. 13, at 1:57 p.m., the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 transfer from Tuscarawas County in reference to a male who stated that his friend had gone under water at the Frogtown Campground and had not resurfaced for more than five minutes. Upon arrival of deputies, they were informed that the male, a 23-year-old from the Newcomerstown area, had attempted to swim across the pond and had gone under. Deputies were advised that there was another male that attempted to reach him but was unsuccessful.

Dive teams from three different counties were dispatched to the scene and after an extensive underwater search the male was located and removed from the water at 3:33 p.m. Assisting deputies at the scene was the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Walhonding Valley Fire District Dive Team, West Lafayette Fire Department, Three Rivers Fire Department, Dover Fire Department, New Philadelphia Fire Department, Gnadenhutten Fire Department, East Holmes County Dive Team, Coshocton County EMS, Newcomerstown Emergency Response Squad, Newcomerstown Police Department and the Coshocton County Coroner. The name of the male is being withheld pending the notification of family.
