Safety house visits Coshocton Elementary School

COSHOCTON – The Coshocton Fire Department marked Fire Prevention Week by spending time educating children at Coshocton Elementary School.
Students watched a video about fire safety and had the chance to practice what they learned by visiting the Coshocton Fire Department Safety House, which was brought to the school.
“Mainly we talk about smoke detectors, what they sound like and what to do when they go off,” said Fire Prevention Officer Brent Endsley.
The front of the house is set up like a kitchen and the back like a bedroom. In the front area they talk about kitchen safety and fire alarms. In the back they are able to let the bedroom fill with smoke and have students test what they’ve learned.
“They can touch the door with the back of their hand to see if it’s warm or cool and then proceed out through the other door and to their meeting place,” Endsley said. “This gives them hands-on practice. You never know when or if you are going to be faced with a fire. This helps them know what to do in case they are.”
He added that all kindergarteners would receive smoke detectors. Other students were encouraged to tell their parents to come to the fire station to get one if they do not already have one in their home.
“We want to get as many smoke detectors out there as we can and educate as many people as we can so the one time they need it they have it,” Endsley said.
