Canal royalty crowned during Apple Butter Stirrin’
COSHOCTON – On Saturday, Oct. 19, the 49th Apple Butter Stirrin’ in Roscoe Village held a special contest on the main stage. Six young ladies competed for the title of Coshocton Canal Queen and Princess.
Much of the contest was held prior to being on stage. Each contestant, three for princess and three for queen, had to take a history test, talk about their costume and write an essay, among other things. At the contest, each princess contestant had to give a one and a half to three minute speech and each queen’s speech was to be three to five minutes and incorporate details of their outfit in it.
Melissa Grignon, Katie Wilson and Danielle Crown served as judges for the contest. Liah Alloway, Brianna Fink and Zoe Hardesty competed for the princess title and Allison Blevens, Emmilia Flores and Lynsey Stonebraker vied for the queen title. Flores was announced as top fundraiser with Stonebraker as top queen contestant and Alloway as top princess.
The spirit award is voted on by the contestants. Stonebraker and Fink won the spirit awards. Best costume for princess was third place, Hardesty, second place, Fink and Alloway, first. Best costume for queen was third place, Flores, second, Stonebraker and Blevens, first.
Essay awards went to Hardesty, third, Alloway, second and Fink, first for the princess contest. The queen essay awards were third place, Blevens, second place, Flores and first place, Stonebraker.
2018 Coshocton Canal Queen Sophie Meiser and Princess Jazlene Brown shared their favorite memories and said tearful goodbyes as canal royalty.
Right before the winners were named, a very special announcement was made. Ava Winner had planned on competing in the princess contest, but was diagnosed with a brain tumor last winter and is undergoing treatments. She was at the contest, dressed in her canal dress and was named Princess 3rd Attendant to a standing ovation from the crowd. She is the daughter of Melissa and Dan Winner.
Princess 2nd Attendant is Zoe Hardesty, daughter of Rachel Alloway and Zach Hardesty. Princess 1st Attendant is Liah Alloway, daughter of Kendall and Nicole Alloway. The 2019 Coshocton Canal Princess is Brianna Fink, daughter of Denny and Amanda Fink.
Queen 2nd Attendant is Allison Blevens, daughter of Amy and Jason Blevens. Queen 1st Attendant is Emmilia Flores, daughter of Jessica Tubbs and Scott Flores. The 2019 Coshocton Canal Queen is Lynsey Stonebraker, daughter of Ron and Amy Stonebraker.
After being crowned, Stonebraker said, “I’m pretty happy – it just seems so unreal right now.” She is looking forward to traveling with her court. “This is just an awesome group of girls and it’s going to be so much fun!” She said the hardest part of the contest was being onstage and hearing the other contestants’ speeches and hoping hers would measure up. “It’s a lot of pressure.”
Fink is very excited about traveling with her court, too. She said she has wanted to be the Canal Princess since she was little and she is really happy to be named the princess. “I was very nervous. It’s hard talking in front of everyone.”
Earlier in the day, the Coshocton Canal Junior Queen contest was held. Audrey Tubbs, 8, was named the Junior Queen. “I’m excited. I can’t wait to travel everywhere. I was really nervous and was surprised when my name was said.”
Ella Lawson, 7, was named the Junior Queen 1st Attendant. “I am very excited to have a crown, because I’m named after a princess (Cinderella) and I wanted a crown.” Junior Queen 2nd Attendant is Jordynn Stickdorn, 7. “I was really nervous. I can’t wait to go to parades.”
