Crossley kisses pig as part of breast cancer awareness campaign

| October 23, 2019

Betsy Crossley won a competition on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and had to kiss Oinky the pig as part of Windsorwood’s breast cancer awareness campaign.

COSHOCTON – Windsorwood Place had a unique way to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. Four jars were placed on the front desk with names of four administrators, and residents and visitors were allowed to place money in the jar with the name of the person they most wanted to see kiss a pig. Betsy Crossley, Jodie Thompson, Retta Cross, and Marla Myers were in the running for a chance to kiss a pig. Although it was a close competition, Crossley was ultimately chosen as the administrator who had to pucker up and plant a big one on porky on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

This wasn’t the only fundraiser Windsorwood did to raise awareness for breast cancer. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the nursing home had a rockin’ good time as they held a rocking chair competition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The combined money from both events went to Breast Cancer Funds of Ohio which is a fund given as an emergency funding to those who have breast cancer. They can use this money to help pay bills, buy groceries, etc. They also get funding from breast cancer license plates that are sold in Ohio.

“We really wanted to do something that will stay in Ohio,” said Myers, activities director at the nursing home. “It’s the first year I’ve ever done this, so I’m really excited.”

In the kissing pig contest alone, more than $400 was collected. The pig, Oinky, a six-month-old piglet, was owned by six-year-old Abi Frazee. Oinky came all decked out in her pink tutu, but when it came time for the kiss, Oinky vocalized her displeasure with a few squeals.

“I think that my sister and my family really was rooting for me to kiss this pig,” said Crossley. “I got them to donate, and I thought they would have donated to someone else, but they chose me. It was fun, but the nose was a little too wet for a kiss on the nose, so a forehead kiss was fine. But we are really happy to donate this money to breast cancer awareness.”
