Local Events

 

Christmas in the Village: West Lafayette will have Christmas in the Village on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Lions Club is having a pancake breakfast at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church from 7:30 to 10 a.m. A Reindeer Run will be at Burt Park with registration at 9 a.m. and the run at 10 a.m. Registration is $20. There will be a craft show at the First Baptist Church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Christmas parade begins at 1 p.m. The West Lafayette Royalty are doing a sensory toy dive and toys can be dropped off at the Baptist Church.

 

Pictures with Santa: The Coshocton County Humane Society will have Pet Pictures with Santa at Tractor Supply on Sunday, Dec. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. Two free wallet-sized photos with a donation of food or litter to the Coshocton County Humane Society. Other photo sizes available are one 5×7 for $10 or a three-inch pin back button for $5.

 

Christmas for Kids: The fifth annual Christmas for Kids will be Sunday, Dec. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Coshocton Community Center. There will be refreshments, a puppet show sponsored by the Fresno Bible Church, meet and greet with Santa, and pictures with Santa. They are looking for individuals to sponsor a child in need this Christmas. Select an angel from Diana Weller and buy them a gift for Christmas. All gifts need dropped off by Friday, Dec. 6 to ITM Marketing, 331 Main St. Make sure you have a small wrapped gift for your child to receive from Santa at the party. The other gift will be sent home with the parent for Christmas morning.

 

Bluegrass Music: Three Rivers Bluegrass Music and Relay for Life Team Alana presents bluegrass music at Coshocton Village Inn and Suites, 115 N. Water St., on SR 541 beside McDonald’s, once a month. Admission is $7 per person; those 12 and under, no charge. Featured band is from 7 – 9:15 p.m. Acoustic jam is 9:30 – 10:30 p.m. For information, call 740-498-8456. Toys Accepted: Coshocton County Firefighter Toychest is accepting new unwrapped toys for low income families in Coshocton County. Board Meeting: Coshocton Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) will have their next board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the CMHA Learning Center, 823 Magnolia St., Coshocton. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss regular business.

Reversing Diabetes Seminar: There will be a Reversing Diabetes Seminar on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 at Kids America at 7 p.m. This is a lifestyle change program, and more than 80 percent of those who stick with the program no longer have the disease or have reduced their medication. Free Baby Clothes: The Pregnancy Distress Center offers free baby clothing and baby items to county residents. Benefits

 

Spaghetti Dinner Benefit: There will be a benefit for Sabrena Smith-Weese on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Coshocton Moose from 3 to 8 p.m. Spaghetti dinner is $6. Dinner includes spaghetti, bread, salad, drink, and dessert. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and an auction. Sabrena was diagnosed with malignant neoplasm of the upper third esophagus and lung cancer.

 

Fundraiser: There will be a chili dinner at the Elks Lodge, 434 Chestnut St., Coshocton as a fundraiser for Sabastian Wethy, who is recovering from baby shaken syndrome, from noon to 6 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. On Sunday, Dec. 15, there will be a pool tournament at noon with a Calcutta at 1 p.m., $20 entry fee. There will also be a spaghetti dinner at 1 p.m. and a live auction at 3 p.m. In the evening, Tyndal Creek Band will play and entry is by donation.

Board Meeting: The River View Board of Education next meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. This meeting will be held in the River View High School Library.

 

Board Meeting: Coshocton County JVSD will have their next board meeting in the Board of Education Conference Room, 23640 Airport Rd., on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 a.m.

 

Pop Tabs: River View High School Teen Leadership Corps class will be collecting pop tabs to then donate to the Ronald McDonald Foundation in April. You can send pop tabs to the school with students or drop them off at the high school, junior high or the elementary schools including Warsaw, Conesville, and Keene. Cookie and Candy Sale: Isleta UMC will have their 13th annual “Christmas Cookie & Candy” sale in the church basement on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 8 to 11 a.m. There will be hundreds of delicious holiday cookies and candies to choose from, and you can make up your own assortment of favorites. Cookie Sale: Prairie Chapel, 45494 CR 23 and ST 36, Coshocton, will have their annual cookie sale on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

Tree Lighting Ceremony: The Clark Community Presbyterian Church will have the second annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Miley Community Center. The children will begin the evening making ornaments at 5 p.m. Santa will be there for the kids and “young at heart”. At 6 p.m., the Christmas story will be told by Pastor Dr. Greg Bendle with the lighting of the tree followed by singing carols. Everyone is welcome, come join the fun! Refreshments will be served.

 

Chalfant Church Celebration: Chalfant Church will celebrate Christ’s birth at the annual Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 8. A carry-in dinner will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a program of Christmas music and readings at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Children’s Group: The Bible Explorers’ Children’s Group at the First Baptist Church West Lafayette is meeting at the church on Sunday nights from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Come join us for bible stories, games, food and a lot of fun. Cub Scouts: On Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at the East School for the purpose of establishing a Cub Scout Pack in Newcomerstown. The mission of Scouts BSA is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the scout oath and law. Cub Scouting is open to all youth, boys and girls, in grades K-5. If you are interested in helping re-establish the Cub Scouts in our area, plan on attending. Breakfast Buffet: The West Lafayette Lions will have a breakfast buffet on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the West Lafayette United Methodist Church. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children, and children under two eat for free. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, French toast, scrambled eggs., orange juice, and coffee.

 

Historical Club Meeting: “The History of Christmas Traditions” will be the theme for the Coshocton Historical Club which meets Monday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. Bee Lehner will present this holiday program, and the roll call will be “your favorite Christmas ornament.” Team members responsible for this meeting are Brenda Davis, Bee Lehner, Joyce Mullet, and Lula Williams who will have devotions. Dessert will be enjoyed by all. Visitors welcome.

 

SWCD Meeting: The Coshocton Soil and Water Conservation District will meet Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. for a monthly board meeting. Meetings are held at the office, 724 S. Seventh St. Meetings are always held the second Wednesday of the month. Schedules are subject to change.

 

Chili Cook-Off: The Royal Butterflies Relay for Life Team will be hosting a chili cook-off and quarter auction at RHDD, 1517 Chestnut St., Coshocton, on Saturday, Dec. 14 from noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Royal Butterflies Relay for Life Team’s effort. Mental Health Support: NAMI Coshocton County will host a family and friends support and education event featuring Frank and Cece Cugliari, who will share their stories about having family members with mental health illness on Monday, Dec. 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the grand central station room at the Coshocton County Regional Medical Center. Make It, Take It: Saturday, Dec. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., youth in grades kindergarten through eighth are invited to the Coshocton Community Center to prepare a mosaic tile candle base along with gift box and a card. CoshoctonOhioRocks: The Facebook group, #CoshoctonOhioRocks meets on Saturdays at the community center on Browns Lane from 1 – 2:30 p.m. for rock painting and posting rocks for people who do not have or use social media.

Vietnam Veterans: The Vietnam Veterans meet the second Saturday of each month at the American Legion at 9 a.m. If you are a Vietnam Veteran who served during the Vietnam War, whether you served in country or not, you are welcome to attend.

Volunteers Needed: The Newcomerstown Historical Society is seeking new members and volunteers to act as tour guides and to help out on other tasks at the Olde Main Street Museum and Temperance Tavern. All volunteers will train for the task you choose. Food for Fines, Coshocton Public Library, West Lafayette Branch Library, Dec. 2 – 30: During the month of December, the Coshocton Public Library and West Lafayette Branch Library will waive overdue fines on your library record when you bring a non-perishable food donation for people or pets. This offer only applies to overdue fines. It does not include lost or damaged items. Donations will go to the Salvation Army Food Pantry or Coshocton County Animal Shelter. Featured Art Exhibit, West Lafayette Branch Library, Dec. 2 – 30: Original artwork is featured monthly at the West Lafayette Branch Library by area artists. The featured artist for December is Halley Jones. Stop by the branch during regular business hours to view the exhibit.

 

Books Galore Book Store, Coshocton Public Library: Basement, Mondays, 3 – 6 p.m., Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (except Wednesday, Dec. 25), Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.: The Books Galore Book Store has gently used books, DVDs, videos, and magazines for sale at rock bottom prices. The bookstore is in the basement of the Coshocton Public Library and operated by the Friends of the Library. All proceeds benefit the Coshocton Public Library, West Lafayette Branch Library, and Bookmobile. It is open to the public for cash sales only. The elevator at the Coshocton Public Library is temporarily out of service, so please be aware that the bookstore can only be accessed by the stairs. We apologize for the inconvenience.

 

Senior Center Book Club, Coshocton Senior Center, Wednesday, Dec. 4, 1 – 2 p.m.: Join the Coshocton Public Library at the Coshocton Senior Center, 201 Browns Lane, for a book discussion led by Holli Rainwater. We meet at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesdays of September through December and February through May. Books are always better when shared among friends! Registration is not required.

 

Plugged and Unplugged, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesdays, Dec. 4, 11, and 18,

2:30 – 5 p.m.: Games, snacks, friends, and fun! Teens grades 7 through 12 are invited to gather at the library for video games, internet access, board games, crafting, or just to hangout. This free weekly event is partially sponsored by Friends of the Library. Registration is not required.

 

Chi Class, Roscoe United Methodist Church: Gym, Thursdays, Dec. 5 and 12, 10 – 11 a.m.: Join the Coshocton Public Library at the Roscoe United Methodist Church Gym to practice gentle exercises that reduce stress and increase vitality. Chi Class is taught by Holli Rainwater, a Certified Tai Chi Easy Practice Leader. Registration is not required.

 

Holiday Open House, West Lafayette Branch Library, Saturday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Mingle and jingle with family and friends at the West Lafayette Branch Library Holiday Open House. Enjoy hot cocoa, cookies, a holiday craft, music, and a door prize drawing. Come and have fun before the West Lafayette Christmas parade, which will go past the branch library at 1 p.m. This holiday celebration is held in conjunction with the West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce ‘Christmas in the Village’ community event.

 

Coffee Club, Presbyterian Church parlor, 142 N. Fourth Street, Coshocton, Monday, Dec. 9, 10 – 11:30 a.m.: Senior adults 55 and older are invited to join us for a hot cup of coffee and enlightening conversation. We explore a different topic each month: Armchair travel, history, biography, art, literature, popular culture, and more. We cannot repair, fix, troubleshoot, or diagnose malfunctioning devices or software.

 

Holiday Lights, Coshocton Public Library: Large Meeting Room, Wednesday, Dec. 10, 6:45 – 7:15 p.m.: Join us for a truly special holiday program that will ignite the light of this special season. Children ages 3-12 are invited to a holiday story time while the room is filled with beautiful holiday lights. Registration is required. I Spy: Holiday Room, Coshocton Public Library: Small Meeting Room, Dec. 23, Dec. 26, Dec. 27, and Dec. 28, Open during regular library hours: Love to play “I Spy?” The small meeting room at the back of the children’s room at the Coshocton Public Library has been decorated for the holidays. Use your powers of observation to find the items listed on your questionnaire: Ten candy canes, a furry stocking, a gingerbread man, and so much more. Whether you are a preschooler, school-age child, or teen, there will be an age-appropriate challenge for you. Reservations are not necessary. Just drop into the library for a holiday-spirited activity.

 

Coshocton Public Library System will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Dec. 31, and Jan. 1, Coshocton Public Library, West Lafayette Branch Library, Bookmobile: All locations of the Coshocton Public Library System will be closed in observance of the holiday season. For your convenience, return boxes are available outside of the library 24/7, and you can still access the Ohio Digital Library, online catalog, and online databases even when the library is closed.
