Ridgewood students spread holiday cheer at nursing home

Students in Beyond the Bell program at Ridgewood Middle School spread holiday cheer to residents of the Lafayette Pointe Nursing Home.

WEST LAFAYETTE – On Monday, Dec. 16, a group of Ridgewood Middle School Beyond the Bell students made a trip to the Lafayette Pointe Nursing Home to deliver some Christmas cheer to the residents. The group has been working hard over the past few weeks making candy cane reindeer and Christmas cards. The idea to do this type of outreach was a joint venture between the Card Game Club and Project-Based Learning.

The groups discussed the needs of our community and agreed the biggest need that the students saw was people being lonely during the holidays. The students decided that they would work to resolve this issue by first identifying where they could make the biggest impact.

After some discussion, the students decided that Lafayette Pointe would be the best choice. Next, the students had to decide how they could help. While they discussed many options, they opted to make cards and ornaments for the residents in an effort to spread holiday cheer.

The students completed their projects last week with the aid of the youth leaders and delivered them to the residents personally. This gave each student a chance to interact with the patients and show how much they care about them. Students also left extra cards at the nurses’ station for any incoming patients or those they were not able to visit. They also shared their Christmas cheer with the staff of Lafayette Pointe.

This memorable experience will long be treasured by the residents and students and will strengthen the bond between the school and community.
