Third graders help nursing home residents
COSHOCTON – Third grade students at Coshocton Elementary School collected blankets, socks, stuffed animals, and ChapStick to put together gifts for residents at Signature HealthCARE of Coshocton. Bath & Body Works donated hand lotions for each gift bag, Binsanity donated all of the gift bags and some wheelchair cushions, and Kyle Libby State Farm donated blankets. The project was spearheaded by third grade teacher Amy Unkefer. “My own children and I were visiting a shut-in who one day wasn’t there,” Unkefer said. “We found her down at the nursing home. She was alone and hadn’t had any visitors. I thought who doesn’t like to see kids at Christmas time and decided to try this.” Students helped her finish packing the 65 gift bags on Dec. 18 and signed cards to go with them. That evening students and their parents were invited to join her at the care center to sing carols and pass out cookies and the gift bags to residents. Pictured waiting for instructions from Unkefer are third graders Riley Wood and Brooklin Shaffer.
