Primary election moved to June 2
The Ohio Association of Election Officials (OAEO) today responded to the news that Ohio’s 2020 presidential primary will be moved to June 2, and mail-in absentee balloting will be extended to May 26th.
“Just like every Ohioan, election administrators have been adjusting to the ever-changing news out of Columbus. While we were prepared to run a successful election tomorrow, events beyond our control have dictated that this will not happen,” said Michelle Wilcox, president of OAEO. “We are first and foremost concerned about the safety of our voters and election workers and will continue to follow the advice of the public health professionals.”
“Over my years as an election official, I have come to understand the need to be flexible,” said Lisa Welch, first vice president of OAEO. “This takes it to a whole new level. We will work diligently to make all the necessary modifications to our procedures and ensure that the public is aware of what their opportunities and responsibilities now entail.”
“There are many details that need to be worked out to guarantee our voters continue to have a safe and orderly voting experience this spring,” said Brian Sleeth, vice president of the OAEO. “We look forward to working closely with Secretary LaRose and other interested parties to make sure this happens.”
The Ohio Association of Election Officials is a bipartisan organization representing Ohio’s 88 county boards of elections and their staff members. Its mission is to promote fair, accurate and reliable elections through the education of its members, advocating for sound election policies, and communicating accurate information regarding the administration of elections.
