Let’s get out and support local businesses

Based solely on the amount of traffic that I see in town now I think just about everyone is tired of this and ready to move on with their lives, jobs and some recreational opportunities. That could be everyone actually.

For all of you mother’s out there in Beacon readership land, here’s hoping that even with the COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines you were able to enjoy a relaxing Mother’s Day. I don’t need to tell you that moms are special people and deserve the very best in respect, kindness and love that we can give them. For many, this will be a year that they will not be able to physically be together but modern technology makes almost all things possible.

Our local schools are being innovative and creative in figuring out ways to “hold” a graduation ceremony which the seniors in the class of 2020 certainly deserve. Great job to all involved!

Right now, what the school environment will look like in the fall is anybody’s guess of course. We can wish this or wish that, but who would want to make a leap forward that is just not wise. No one will want to put our youth in harm’s way.

It looks like the baseball season is still in the midst of figuring out what to do – I thought I heard a rumor that the 2020 season would start on July 1 – a Google search brought up articles that do not have that as fact and that discussions are ongoing to figure out a plan. The economic impact of the baseball season alone is huge when you consider the folks that work at the games, prepare the fields and stadiums for play and many others.

I suppose at some point we will need to look forward to the fall – and just how busy it might be. With events being pushed back or cancelled outright it just makes sense that something will have to give. People will only have so much time and finances to work with. It is my opinion that, being the Americans that we are, sports and recreation will top the list with dining out perhaps being number one over both of those. Have you stopped getting take-out food because of COVID-19? Nope, probably not.

There are so many people that are working long and hard to ensure that we are safe. From the very top of our nation’s leaders, whether you agree or disagree, decisions were made. There was very little waffling about what to do. You can always poke holes in what others are doing or have done during this global crisis. But unless you have the knowledge that they have, and the information that they have on hand at the time, you would be guessing at best.

What remains for us to do as Americans is to support our leaders at the federal, state and local levels and do our part to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Thank you for your continued support of our locally owned businesses. They are going to need our support over the next few months. Let’s do it safely and wisely but let’s do it!
