Legacy Lanes & Lounge making updates
When Legacy Lanes & Lounge was forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic owners Sue and Jeff Oswald decide to use that time for some updates. For the first time in more than 70 years bowlers will be competing on new lanes and there also will be underground ball returns.
“These were the original lanes from when the bowling alley opened in ‘47 or ‘46,” Jeff said. “It opened with 14 lanes and now we have 34. The lanes have been sanded over and over throughout the years and weren’t in as good of shape as they should be. We had planned to do this over a year ago, but when we had to shut down we figured it was a good time to start.”
The new synthetic lanes will require less upkeep and allow bowlers to score higher.
“The wood ones needed refinished and sanded and we will never have to do that again now,” Jeff said.
The project was scheduled to take six weeks and they plan to open as soon as at least one section is completely done.
“It’s a huge investment, but we had to do it to move forward and grow,” Sue said. “This will help us bid on and host more tournaments, which will bring a lot of business to the community through hotels, restaurants and other stores.”
Jeff said they already have their first big tournament booked for February 2022.
“You have to bid three years in advance,” Sue said.
Legacy Lanes is also home to River View High School and Muskingum University’s bowling teams. The Oswalds also are hoping that Coshocton High School will have a team competing in the future at Legacy Lanes.
The couple have owned the bowling alley for almost three years. They are both very thankful for everyone who has supported them during the pandemic by ordering food for carryout from the lounge and giving back in other ways.
“Our bowlers are amazing,” Sue said. “They are some of the most generous people I’ve ever met. Most of the leagues have extra prize funds for awards at the end of the season and quite a few of them decided to donate that money back to us. They also are very supportive of our takeout.”
