Bill supporting River View Schools signed into law
A bill that will help River View schools and other districts facing financial challenges in the wake of power plant closures was signed into law by Governor Mike DeWine.
Speaker Larry Householder, who helped craft House Bill 164, said a host of issues in the nation’s complex public utilities arena, including the age of power plants and changes in power generation, have led to plant closures and revaluations.
“Our goal is to help local school districts like River View better manage through these situations,” Householder said.
Ohio’s complex system for funding schools relies on a mix of largely state and local tax revenue. When a large power plant such as Conesville shuts down, part of the local fallout is that local tax revenue for the area school district declines. In some cases, that impact can have significant consequences.
River View is one of several districts around the state facing financial difficulties because of power plant closures or revaluations. It’s estimated River View will receive an additional $117,000 for the current school year. For the 2020-21 school year, the amount is expected to be greater.
