When she was 3-years-old, Ridgewood High School junior Julia Grimmett began playing the piano and taking lessons. She discovered her love of singing when she joined a school choir. Now, she is sharing her talents across several social media networks and was even part of the virtual 2020 Adobe Max Concert.

“I wrote my first song in middle school, but it didn’t have any lyrics. I asked my principal, Mrs. Claxon, if I could play it during a school dance and she said yes. It really gave me the boost of confidence I needed to start more songs,” Grimmett said.

She wrote her first real song in the summer of 2019 when she was 15.  The song was titled “Better.” It was written after the floods in West Lafayette earlier that year. “It seemed like a lot of people were struggling. I was really just trying to give hope to my friends – a song to sing to make you feel better.” Her favorite kind of music to sing and write is any kind that makes her feel happy and uplifting.

Grimmett plays several instruments. “I play mostly piano and guitar, but I have been learning other instruments along the way like the ukulele and drums. My favorite, by far, is the piano, though. A close second is marimba, which I love playing in my school band. It’s awesome.”

While she hasn’t decided on a major for college, yet, music is definitely a possibility, or possibly psychology. She started her YouTube channel (Julia Grimmett) when she was younger to share covers of songs, but now she shares all of her songs and music videos. She also has a website www.juliagrimmett.com and is on iTunes and Spotify.

“I had posted the music video to my song ‘Lost in the Sky’ and a nice lady from Adobe emailed me and asked if I could make an abridged version of it with their software for their virtual event. They had it online this year because of the pandemic. It was basically a showcase for all of the cool new projects people had made and there were some really cool people in it. It was really exciting.”

Grimmett is the daughter of Leslie and David Grimmett. In addition to music, she also loves painting and playing video games in her free time.
