Awareness event aims to curb falls among older adults

| September 17, 2022

Approximately one in three Ohioans age 65 and older fall each year and falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and death for older adults. To mark September as Falls Prevention Awareness Month, Altercare Coshocton is partnering with the Ohio Department of Aging’s STEADY U Ohio initiative to take 10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls.

“Falls are a serious concern for our older friends and neighbors. A fall affects not just the individual who took the tumble, but can also impact their family, friends, and community,” said Aimee Spillman, facility rehab manager. “The good news is that falls are not a normal part of aging, and most falls can be prevented. We’re participating in 10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls to help people in Coshocton identify the many things they can do to reduce their risk.”

10 Million Steps to Prevent Falls is a statewide effort to raise awareness of resources available at the state and community levels to help older residents avoid a potentially life-changing tumble. Daily physical activity, like 15-30 minutes of simple exercise, coupled with smart changes to your home, health, and habits, can significantly lower your risk of falling.

Altercare Coshocton is supporting the campaign by hosting a walking event on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 9:30 a.m. The one mile walk will be held around the facility campus, Altercare Coshocton 1991 Otsego Ave. For more information about this event or to meet with our team of skilled therapists to learn how you can prevent fall call the facility at 740-622-2074 or stop in and visit.

The Ohio Department of Aging strives to have as many Ohioans as possible contribute at least one mile to the total number of steps taken statewide in the name of falls prevention. Visit www.aging.ohio.gov/10millionsteps for a list of walking groups and events around the state, as well as other ways you can help contribute to the state total.

Altercare Coshocton offers skilled therapy services including physical, occupational and speech therapists who offer both inpatient as well as outpatient therapy services.
