Betty Bates PicBetty Jean Bates, 85, of Port Washington, passed away at her home on Friday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2013.

Betty was born in Beverly in Washington County on March 29, 1928, the daughter of the late Dennie B. and Roxie Mae Full Albright.

She attended Beverly High School and together with her husband was the owner and operator of Bates Metal Products, Inc. in Port Washington for 57 years. She also served Bates Metal Products as secretary/treasurer. Betty enjoyed shopping on the TV home shopping channels and was a big fan of the Facebook game Farmville.

Betty is survived by her husband, James A. Bates of Port Washington, whom she married on Aug. 18, 1945. Betty and Jim just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Betty also is survived by two sons, James W. and wife Renee Bates of Cambridge and Terry L. and wife Jan Bates of Gnadenhutten. Also surviving to cherish her memories are her six grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Dr. John Porter of North Royalton, Nicole and husband Robert Roth of Port Washington, Bryan and wife Jody Bates of Hood River, Ore., Brandon and wife Taneka Bates of Dennison, Jamie Fulton of Gnadenhutten and Kelly and husband Brian Kohler of Gnadenhutten; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews in the Bates family.

Funeral services to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Ourant Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas Gardner will conduct the services. Burial will follow at the Salem-Union Cemetery in Port Washington. Visiting hours will be held from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral.

The family is requesting that memorial be made in Betty’s name to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll and Stark Counties, 710 Commercial Ave., SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
