Board of DD holds annual talent show
Since 2012, the Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities has held a talent show in the spring to showcase any kind of talent a person wanted to share. This year, the talent show was held on April 20 at Hopewell School. The gym of the school was packed with families and friends all waiting to cheer on the contestants.
Toby Collins, director of recreation and Special Olympics for the CCBDD, said, “We saw how talented so many individuals were and this was a way for them to show everyone. These are the talents, activities and hobbies that make them happy and proud of themselves. It is important to provide them with an opportunity to shine.”
Twelve people performed on stage while several more displayed art projects. The visual projects were everything from coloring and painting to leather works and dream catchers. While most people sang, Sarabeth Spaulding chose to share her cup stacking skills.
Winners from the visual art show were: People’s Choice – Phyllis Gallion and Tani Huebner, Imagine – Phyllis Gallion, Most Unique – Tani Huebner and Picasso – Rob Jones.
The performance winners were: Most Original- Tani Huebner, American Idol – Jalen Berry, The Voice – Samantha Miller, People’s Choice – Jalen Berry and Samantha Miller, and America’s Got Talent – Sarabeth Spaulding. Spaulding also won the Shon Connors Award.
Scott Balentine was excited to sing and play his guitar in the show. He sang “Change my Mind.” “It’s a slow song and I’ve been practicing a lot. I’m not nervous. I’m focused. It was fun. Gonna do something different next year.”
Jason Neighbor was another young man who sang and played his guitar. He chose “Back to Tennessee” for his song. “For my family and friends. I practiced and am not nervous at all. It’s fun to see all my friends and I’ve done it lots of times.”
Collins said she wanted to thank DJ Bob Casey, Emcee Shawn Hart and all of the judges for helping with the talent show.
