BPW offers a ‘Weird and Wild’ experience at cake auction

| October 8, 2022

“Weird and Wild” cakes are coming to Coshocton as the Business and Professional Women’s organization hosts the 17th annual cake auction fundraiser. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Frontier Power Company Community Room,  770 S. Second St. in Coshocton.

Cake viewing, voting, and silent bidding will occur from 2-4 p.m., with the live auction beginning at 4 p.m.

Kim Gress, committee chairperson for this year’s event, said the “Weird and Wild” theme was chosen as a way to tie into the fun and creativity of the Halloween connection. She said she hopes people feel inspired to use their imaginations as they decorate cakes and prepare incentives to donate to the event.

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to register cakes and an optional incentive. According to Gress, the goal is to register at least 65 cakes and incentive packages for this year’s auction. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 21, 2022. She indicated the cakes offer the entertainment value while the incentives provide an added draw for those bidding on the cakes. Incentives can coordinate with the cake theme, but don’t have to. She said that while it hasn’t often been done, individuals should feel free to partner with business owners to combine their efforts. In addition to cakes and incentive packages, BPW also accepts sponsorships from businesses and individuals.

A new element added to last year’s event, a kid’s cake baking contest, was met with enthusiasm by children and parents, and continues this year. Children, under parent supervision, are encouraged to design, bake, and decorate cakes for public viewing and voting.

To bolster the competitive spirit of the event, trophy awards are presented to the winners of the “Best Kids” cake, “People’s Choice” and “Most Unusual” cakes.

The cake auction serves as a fundraiser in support of the BPW’s Working Woman’s Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to assist local women in furthering educational goals and professional development. The organization accepts applications in the first quarter of each year and announces the winners each May. While at least one recipient is chosen each year, Gress said she has known as many as three recipients to have been granted scholarships, depending on the number of applicants and the success of the fundraising event.

Cakes can be dropped off to the Frontier Power Community Room on Friday, Oct. 28 from 5-7 p.m. or Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
