Brinker named showman of showmen at the Coshocton County Fair
Every year, the youth who are named top showman of their animal class compete to see who will be named showman of showmen at the county fair. This year, the contest was held on Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The show began in Hunter Arena with all of the youth showing their skills at handling llama, horses and hogs. None of the animals is owned by the youth in the competition. The showmen are judged on their knowledge and handling of 10 different animals.
Morgan Rowe, River View eighth grader, has been showing dairy cows since she was little and this was the second time she was competing in the showman of showmen competition. She said it was a fun experience and she enjoyed interacting with the other youth. She was most worried about showing the guinea pig that night. “I’ve never shown one and I don’t know much about it.”
Rowe said she was most comfortable with the dairy and beef cows. “I have these at home so it comes natural to me.” She watched some of the hog, sheep and beef shows to get some ideas of what she would need to do in the showman competition.
Twelve-year old Adalynn Endsley said she earned her showmanship title with her hog, but she also shows cows. She was most worried about the rabbits. “I’m not sure about flipping them. And the llamas because they look kinda scary.” She studied a little bit and went to the sheep show for ideas of what she needed to know for the competition.
Taryn Tumblin was competing the showmanship contest for the second time. “I think the hardest will be the guinea pig and the turkey because those are mostly knowledge questions. I’ve never held one and it’s hard to study because you don’t know what the judge will ask.” She won her showmanship award with her horse, so she wasn’t really worried about that part.
“But, the last time, I won with my horse, too, and ended up in seventh with the horse in the contest. I would hope I do well with the horse and the llama is just leading. I just really want to try to have fun tonight.”
At the end of the competition, Aiden Brinker, a member of Premium Ag Kids was named the 2023 showman of showmen.
