Campus recognizes Geography Awareness Week with film
NEWARK – The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) will host a screening of the Egyptian film “The Yacoubian Building” from 6 – 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the John L. and Christine Warner Center’s Performance Platform. A discussion of the film as a reflection of recent Egyptian society will follow the film, and light snacks will be provided. This event is free and open to the public; however due to mature subject matter, the film is for adults only.
Based on the bestselling book by Egyptian author Alaa-Al-Aswany, the 2006 Egyptian film holds the record for the largest opening week in Egypt. It covers controversial topics such as corruption, frustrated social and economic aspirations, Islamic terrorism, and homosexuality. Highly critical of life under the Mubarak regime, the film was ironically defended by representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood despite these themes.
Funding was provided by the Ohio State Newark/COTC Diversity Committee.
