Chess club makes history again
Last year for the first time ever, Ridgewood Chess Club’s Spring Open Final came down to two siblings playing each other for the right to have their name put on the coveted chess club plaque. Brothers Noah and Jadon Smoulder played in the championship game with Jadon becoming the eventual 2021 champion.
For the second year in a row, there were two siblings playing in the championship game. This year’s 2022 championship game came down to a brother playing his sister. Fourth and fifth grade champion Jayvn Gress, played the sixth and seventh grade champion, Gauge Gress in a best of three game series that determined the chess club’s spring open champion. Little sister defeated her big brother to be the second girl in 31 years to earn the title of spring open tournament champion and have her name engraved onto the plaque.
The spring open chess tournament results were: High School Division: Champion Dakota Kealiher, second place Julia Geer, and third place Raiden Medley; sixth and seventh grade division: Champion Gauge Gress, second place Jadon Smoulder, third place Jacob Blackwell, fourth place Beau Hardesty, and fifth place Bradley Cottrell; and fourth and fifth grade division: Champion Jayvn Gress, second place Noah Smoulder, third place Kendal Myers, fourth place Grady Alan, and fifth place Rilyn Cottrell.
