CHS updates weight room for its students
“We want the best for all of our students.” Justin Smith, athletic director for Coshocton City Schools, made that statement several times when talking about the updates that were made recently to the weight room at Coshocton High School.
“The updates were easier to get because all of the staff came together – we all want what’s best for the students here,” Smith said. “I can’t say enough about how everyone worked together to get this done.”
According to Smith, the equipment in the weight room was last updated in the mid-1990s. “The equipment was in good shape. It was just old. Kids want eye-popping and that’s what we gave them. We want to keep them interested in working out. When the first class saw it, they were blown away. We want the students to know the staff here is always trying to make things better for them.”
Smith shared that the weight room isn’t just for athletes. “We have classes that use it all day. It’s available to all students here.”
The process started in September when the school brought a contractor in to get an idea of cost and decide what they needed. The equipment was ordered after Thanksgiving and was installed at the high school the third week of January. Eight racks made in Coshocton colors with the school’s logo were purchased.
“The community has been really fired up about this. I’ve gotten lots of calls and emails saying how great it looks. The football alumni are working to get money for more improvements to the room. Everything we bought is high quality and is a good investment. It will last years.” The equipment was purchased with grant money.
“We want to get what’s best for our kids. We want young ladies to use it as well and keep everyone on an even playing field. This helps showcase our kids and show them we have pride in them.”
Smith said that a contract also has been signed to fix the scoreboard at Stewart Field. “We are hoping to be able to unveil that at graduation.”
The Coshocton Football Alumni are raising funds for both projects. Donations can be made through their Facebook page or you can contact Smith at 740-622-8519.
“Everybody wants what’s best for the kids. I can’t thank the community and staff enough for pulling together to make this happen.”
