Clyde Richard Kaufman, age 59, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at The Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus.
He was born Saturday, October 30, 1965, in Coshocton, Ohio to Gary L. and Dianne L. (Lowery) Kaufman. As a child, Clyde enjoyed his time traveling with his siblings and parents. This sparked a lifelong love of traveling to notable and historic locations. During his school years at River View, he participated in various extracurricular activities such as plays, debate, chess, and French club. He graduated from River View High School in the class of 1984.
Clyde adored his children. He enjoyed sharing his love of travel with them, destinations were always a mystery. When asked where they were going, he kept the suspense alive by responding with the all-too-familiar “Didn’t I tell ya?”. Many fun-filled hours were also spent doing puzzles, crosswords, and playing a variety of games together.
Clyde was married to Joann Hickman on May 27th, 2013. The two of them enjoyed many road trips in the fall and winter over the years, and were also known to just take off on a whim to some museum or landmark. Their years together would be described as full of humor and contentment with simply being together. Clyde was very thankful for the blessing of having two families that blended together so well. Family time extended to a beloved weekly bible study.
Clyde’s career was in retail, serving as manager with many different companies. He spent the later part of his career with the Staples company, serving as General Manager at the Mt. Vernon, Heath, and Easton Town Center stores. Clyde was a well-liked manager because of his patience, compassion, fairness and the fun environment he created. He was coined as “Boss Man” early in his career at Staples. Connections with his employees were so close, you often found him having them over for a bonfire or at a local restaurant for laughs.
Clyde was also a giver. He always thought of others before himself.
Clyde’s biggest hobby was reading. Over the years, he had accumulated hundreds of books. When he and Joann downsized, he gave many books to his kids, only to begin accumulating more. His favorite authors were Clive Cussler, Steve Berry, Robert Jordan, Agatha Christie, and JRR Tolkien, along with a multitude of others. Clyde’s second biggest hobby was gaming. His enjoyment for games was passed down to his son and many grandchildren. When grandchildren came over, the first thing the boys would want to do was play a video game with grandpa.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Joann (Hickman) Kaufman, his children, Anastasia (Judd) Smailes, Danielle (Daniel) West, Morgan Kaufman, Jarod (Kayla) Kaufman, and Mason (Tomara) Clark; step children, Brock (Natalie) Hazen and Adrienne (Ryan) Hardman; siblings, Alice Dunfee and Ron (Sharon) Kaufman; grandchildren, Jaxson and Joella West, Kay-Lee Smailes, Logan, Aubrey and Brooke West, Kegen, Kaiden and Luna Ross, Lewis and Eleanor Kaufman, Katelynn, Andrew, Selden and Lydia Hazen, Lilly and Leo Hardman; great-granddaughter, Scarlett Hazen.
He was preceded in death by his baby sister, Cindy Louise Kaufman.
