Community support of Camp Invention spurs student success
COSHOCTON – In Coshocton County, the commitment of residents and community leaders to the success of local students is evident through their ongoing support of the Camp Invention® program.
Through area organizations’ 2019 financial support totaling $36,000, local students will attend Camp Invention this year. Camp Invention, the nation’s premier summer enrichment program for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade, is a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame® in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning — as well as builds confidence, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills — in a fun and engaging environment.
Spearheaded by the Coshocton Foundation, local organizations including The Montgomery Foundation; Edwin F. Mulligan Endowed Fund; Simpson Family Donor Advised Fund of the Coshocton Foundation; Ralph D. & Judy P. Wisenburg Fund; McWane Ductile; Wiley’s Finest/Organic Technologies; and Coshocton Rotary Club have joined the effort to give local children a learning opportunity they could have otherwise missed.
The Coshocton Foundation trustees are determined to see the popular summer STEM program expanded to as many students in Coshocton County as possible, said Foundation Executive Director Robert Pell.
“It’s so important to keep young people engaged during the summer months, and also to encourage young girls to consider STEM coursework in their future,” Pell said. “It’s impossible to visit camp and not be caught up in the creative problem solving, the enthusiasm for learning, the fun!
“Thanks to our partners, participation has more than doubled in the past two years, and 170 children benefited from a wonderful week of Camp Invention in Coshocton County last year,” he added. “I can’t wait to see what the campers come up with this year!”
Upcoming Camp Invention sites in the Coshocton area include:
- Coshocton Elementary School, Coshocton, the week of June 10;
- River View Junior High School, Warsaw, the week of June 24.
