Congressman Gibbs announces good news for Great Lakes
WASHINGTON D.C.—Congressman Gibbs released the following statement after the committee released the Water Resources Reform and Development Act Conference Report:
“The Water Resources Reform and Development Act will not only improve our nation’s economic competitiveness as a whole, but also ensure that the Great Lakes maritime network is treated as a unique system when determining project priorities. The Great Lakes are vital to our country and ensuring that they receive the necessary resources is very important. WRRDA will ensure that the Great Lakes ports are treated as a unified system when the United States Army Corps of Engineers plans for dredging and emphasizes the importance of the Great Lakes is taken into consideration when determining where money is spent. The Water Resources Reform and Development Act will enhance our maritime transportation systems by ensuring that the necessary funding and resources are allocated to our important and emerging ports. The Great Lakes is not only important to Cleveland but the surrounding region and will continue to be of importance to our nation’s economy.
“This WRRDA is unlike any previous bill passed by Congress. Instead of hundreds of earmarks, this legislation provides unprecedented reforms to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Program, streamlines and consolidates studies and environmental reviews and ensures responsible investments in our maritime transportation systems. More so than any other nation, America is blessed with thousands of miles of navigable waterways which provides a unique, competitive advantage that helps our businesses grow and create jobs. WRRDA will ensure that America maintains and expands upon this competitive advantage, not just today but in the years to come.”
