COSHOCTON – The Coshocton County Board of Developmental Disabilities celebrate March as DD Awareness Month with a number of activities including a coloring and essay contest.

The coloring contest was for students in kindergarten through third grade and the essay contest was open to children in fourth through sixth grade. Young artists and writers from Ridgewood Local School District, River View Local School District, the Coshocton Christian School and Sacred Heart participated in the activities.

“We wanted to bring awareness to the kids about different types of disabilities,” said Shannon Shontz, director of education at Hopewell School.

The fourth through fifth graders were asked to write about what they think of when they hear the word disability or what it means to be different and the younger students’ colored pictures showing people with different types of disabilities.

“We really appreciate the teachers taking the time to let the kids do this,” Shontz said. “That really meant a lot to us and you can tell the kids put forth a lot of effort. It was hard to choose the winners.”

Winners in both contests received Wal-Mart gift cards.
