Coshocton County Humane Society needs foster homes

| March 28, 2018

COSHOCTON – A little over a year ago, Rachael Selders and a group of volunteers started the Coshocton County Humane Society. Their organization is separate from the animal shelter.

“We don’t have a building, yet, but are raising funds for one. Right now, we need foster homes for the owner-surrender dogs we have,” Selders said. To become a foster home, interested people should visit the organization’s website at www.coshoctoncohumanesociety.org. There is a form on the site that needs to be filled out as the first step.

“Once I give approval, I need to check with landlords, if the person rents their home. I also need to get a reference from a local vet for the person,” Selders said. “Since our dogs are owner-surrenders, we usually have background information that we can share with potential foster families. One of our fosters is in the process of getting adopted right now.”

The Coshocton County Humane Society is operating solely on donations and fundraisers at this point. “We can’t apply for grants until a paperwork glitch is fixed. Last year, our income was $28, 919.16 and this was all from donations and our fundraisers. We have no paid staff – everyone is a volunteer.”

On Sunday, April 8, they will be holding a fundraiser called “Tattoos for a Cause” at Sixth Street Tattoo from noon to 5 p.m. Select tattoos will be available and a portion will be donated to the humane society. They are also planning a craft show and recently had a quarter auction and offered pictures with the Easter Bunny at Tractor Supply. Many of their available kittens are also on display at Tractor Supply.

“We are just so thankful for all of the donations and support we have received in the last year. I especially want to thank WTNS, the Beacon and the Tribune for helping us get the word out about our services and fundraisers,” said Selders.

Anyone can become a member of the Coshocton County Humane Society.  Membership fees are $500 for lifetime members, $40 for regular members, $30 for those 65 and over, and $10 for anyone under 18. Interested parties should contact Selders at 740-575-5829. The humane society also has a Facebook page to keep everyone up to date on fundraisers and animals.
