‘Creating a Global Community’ presentation to be held
COSHOCTON – An exciting afternoon is being planned for Saturday, March 2 at the Muskingum Valley Scout Reservation. “Creating a Global Community” will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to meet international youth leaders and learn how to work in a youth-centered community, develop global leadership skills and create internationally focused partnerships.
Julia Roberts is the organizer of the event. “The world and the United States in particular is becoming increasingly diverse every day. Though diversity can lead to conflict, I hope that we can use this and other opportunities to learn from one another – both our similarities and differences. Partnering with others, communicating across boundaries and educating ourselves on the world around us are absolutely essential – today and for our future.”
Roberts organized the event to complete her work in scouting. She is part of Venturing, which is a co-educational program through the Boy Scouts and will age out of the program this summer. In order to achieve an award called the Summit (equivalent to Eagle Scout), scouts are required to complete a service project to benefit a group or community. This event will allow Roberts to achieve that goal and also allow her to share her own experiences as an intern with Les Scouts Tunisiens (Tunisian Scout Association) in Tunisia last summer.
The format of the event will be very basic. There will be a panel discussion followed by a short break-out session. Youth from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kyrgyzstan, Tunisia and Indonesia will be present and recorded presentations from The Gambia, and Denmark will be shared. Roberts said, “I hope the format and variety will allow a great deal of discussion and interaction between community members and presenters and everyone will find an individual or organization they can relate to.”
This event is open to the community.
