COSHOCTON – Coshocton went to the dogs during the First Friday Celebration on July 7. Several local residents brought their furry best friends to show off and meet other dog lovers. A dog parade was held around the court square at 6:30.

Loki, an 18 month old Great Dane, was by far the largest dog at the event. Even the crowds of people couldn’t distract him from watching where his “mom” (Kendra Bordenkircher) was as she took photographs. Loki’s dad, Craig, kept him company. Craig said he will never have another breed of dog after having Loki. “Great Danes have the greatest personality and are just the best dogs.” He said the only problem with Loki’s size is that he takes up more than his share of the bed and that sometimes, he acts like a kid. “He’s a great dog.”

Rachel Levy, 11, brought Gucci. “My friend told me about the parade and I wanted to bring Gucci and have fun with my friends.” Gucci is 2 years old and was wearing a little sweater. Levy’s friend, Hailey Tubbs, 12, brought Suzie who is 6 years old. Suzie was all dressed up in a bandana skirt, blue sparkling ribbon around her neck and red hair spray on her tail. “I wanted to come and see my friends and walk Suzie.”  Tubbs’ mom, Cassie, was with the girls and so was her little sister, Lily, who is 3.

Six month old Max is a Yorkie/Jack Russell mix and he came to the parade with Andy Huebner. Huebner said the best thing about having Max was having him to cuddle with at night. Oliver, an English Bulldog, is 5 years old and was a favorite with the children. He loved all of the attention and seemed to smile at everyone.  He came with Pete McDonaugh, who said he had to leave Oliver’s brother, Wilbur at home because he didn’t think it would be easy to bring both dogs. McDonaugh said he loves dogs because of their unconditional love they share with him.

One of the oldest dogs at the parade was Babe, a 13 year old who only wanted to be cuddled. She was wearing a cape that looked like a dress and was brought by Donna and Whitney Wilden. “She was my grandma’s dog and when she couldn’t take care of her, we got her. She’s been in the family since she was a little puppy.”

The Mobley family – Jeff, Becky, Dakota, Christopher and Coalton – brought 3 year old Sam to the parade. Sam was proudly showing off his Dallas Cowboys t-shirt. He has been with the family since he was a puppy. Sam was having fun jumping at the balloons that were floating around.

Rachel Murphy brought Gizmo to the parade. “He is five years old and I’ve had him since he was about 6 weeks old. He’s a very laid back dog.” Gizmo was sporting a bow tie and Miller nicknamed him “Yuppie Puppy.” A friend of Murphy’s, Shana Miller, also brought her buddy to the parade. Jett is a two year old miniature Schnauzer. Miller said, “I love his excitement when I get home. We have a routine every day and I know he loves me more than anything.” She also said that’s why she loves dogs – their unconditional love.

All of the dog “parents” at the parade mentioned that unconditional love is the reason they love their dogs so much. Their dogs are family members, not pets.
