Dorothy Jean Marlatt

Dorothy Jean (Sweitzer) Marlatt, 87, Newcomerstown, passed away early Friday morning, December 5, in the Community Hospice House, New Philadelphia. Jean was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on November 30, 1927, and was preceded in death by her parents, Russell R. Johnson and Frances L. Moore Johnson Berry. She was a homemaker and farm wife for all of her adult life and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a Blue Star Mother during the Vietnam War. Jean also enjoyed quilting, gardening, collecting dolls, watching birds, baking, and traveling. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, New Philadelphia, and attended church at First Baptist Church, Newcomerstown, and the Newcomerstown Church of the Nazarene.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy H. Sweitzer, Newcomerstown, who died on February 7, 1982, and whom she married December 15, 1943. Also deceased is her second husband, Charles E. Marlatt, Sr., Newcomerstown, who died on January 6, 2013, and whom she married July 20, 1988. Jean was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Corey M. Meek, Newcomerstown, a step son, J. R. Marlatt, Newcomerstown, who died earlier this year, a brother-in-law, John Isaacson, Inverness Florida, and a half sister-in-law, Trudy Johnson, Ely, Minnesota.

Jean is survived by her five children: Roy (Dick) and wife Cheryl Sweitzer, Marne, Ohio, Christina Knight and fiancé Gary Hickman, Brooksville, Florida, Dan and wife Kathie Sweitzer, Coshocton, Don and wife Phyllis Sweitzer, New Philadelphia, and Patty and husband Dennis Clark, Dover. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Vickie (Shawn) McCune, Port Washington, Bill and wife Lisa Sweitzer, Newark, Amanda and husband Todd Vanmeter, Marne, Andrea Sweitzer, Findlay, Nate and wife Yolonda Sweitzer, Coshocton, Sarah and husband Adam Schmidt, New Philadelphia, Kyle and wife Jessica Sweitzer, New Philadelphia, Mike and wife Carrie Clark, Dover, and Brian Clark, Akron. Also surviving to cherish her memories are 13 great grandchildren: Shawnathan, Dru, Brittny, Austin, Noah, Saylor, Curt, Megan, Abbey, Natalee, Charlie, Ruan, and Remy. Jean also leaves a great great granddaughter, Serenity, a step son and his wife, J. D. and Shannon Marlatt, Newcomerstown, her twin sister, Doris Isaacson,

Inverness, Florida, and a half brother, Charles R. Johnson, Ely, Minnesota, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2:00 PM, in the Ourant Funeral Home. Pastor Tom Barber will conduct the services. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Oxford Township, Tuscarawas County. Visiting hours will also be held on Tuesday in the funeral home, beginning at Noon until the 2:00 PM funeral. The family is requesting that memorials be made in Jean’s name to the Community Hospice of Tuscarawas, Carroll, and Stark Counties, 716 Commercial Avenue, S W, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
