Fatal accident reported on SR 16
On March 23, at approximately 8:57 p.m. the sheriff’s office received a 911 call in reference to a possible injury accident on SR 16 near TR 288 in Virginia TWP.
Upon arrival of emergency personnel, it was found that Tarsem Singh (24 Y.O. male) of Ontario Canada was traveling eastbound in a semi on SR 16 when he turned southbound on TR 288. Singh then backed his semi across SR 16 blocking both lanes of travel in an attempt to turn around due to SR 16 eastbound being closed for construction.
Gary Eckroate (81 Y.O. male) of Newark was traveling westbound on SR 16 when he struck Singh’s trailer. Eckroate and his passenger, Frederick Winegardner (72 Y.O. male) of Heath had to be extricated from the vehicle. Eckroate was pronounced deceased at the scene. Winegardner was transported by CCEMS to Genesis Hospital where he was later transferred to Grant Medical Center. Singh was treated and released on scene.
This incident remains under investigation.
