| May 9, 2022
The Coshocton County Sportsmen Association hosted the 30th annual Coshocton County Kids Fishing Derby on May 7 at Lake Park. There were five categories based on age: 3-6 boys, 3-6 girls, 7-12 boys, 7-12 girls, and 13-16 boys and girls. The event is always open to the public and it is free . There are prizes for length of the fish by age group and door prizes thanks to the donations of local businesses, industries and organizations.
“We get a lot of donations from the city. We  really enjoys putting it on for the kids. It’s a community function,” said Butch Hoover. “We’ve had it every year for a lot of years now. It is always the first Saturday in May for boys and girls  3-16 years old. Generally have about 250 kids but the weather didn’t corporate today so our total is down. It’s a good day for the kids though.”
Each age category could win $25 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third biggest fish and a $10 dollar bill for every fish that measures 10 inches long or more.
“We also have a lot of prizes for the kids , plus they get a beverage and a hot dog,” Hoover said.
Abilene Frazee, 8-years-old, got $10 for her fish. “I have caught a bunch of fish before. Last time I caught a big bass at Scott Thomas’s that almost broke my fishing pole, it was getting ready to pull me in.  I have been coming here for about
five years,” she said.
“I’ve been here a few times but I never caught any yet. I’ll try to wade out in the water where the fish are. Usually I stay on the ground but I thought I would try this,” said Brian Asbery.
This was the first year for Daisy Mardis  to fish. She was relying on her classmate Brian for help. “It’s my first time fishing here but I have fished other places. I’ve been trying but haven’t caught a fish yet so I’m going to try wading out.”
Four  year old Olivia was fishing with her family. Her twin sisters were only two and not old enough to enter yet but they caught a bluegill so far, their aunt said.
