Free hair cuts for students event continues to grow

| August 8, 2024

Three years ago, right after he got his barber license, Brandon Selders, decided he wanted to do something for the community. He shared his idea with his business partner, Jay West, and Locals Barbershop gave free haircuts to students in kindergarten through eighth grade during a one day special.

“It was something that I knew would be amazing for kids and parents and I also wanted to give back to the community. Not much planning that first year, but I knew it would get bigger every year,” Selders said.

This year, the free haircut event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and more shops have joined in and even added food and other activities. You do not need to make an appointment. Locals Barbershop on Chestnut Street, Locals Barbershop Downtown on Sixth Street, 6Th Street Tattoo, McKee’s Mancave Barbershop and Wild Styles are all participating.

Selders said, “We are grilling out as well and the Moose Lodge contacted me about donating food for this event. So it’s getting bigger and bigger, just like I planned.”

Jay West, who runs the Locals Barbershop on Chestnut Street, said he just wants to give back to the community that has been so good to him. “We hope this will help parents out. There is always so much on the parents when they are getting their kids ready for school. Coshocton is a great town and we are blessed to be a part of it.”

6th Street Tattoo will be offering free temporary tattoos and water bottles with drawstring bags for the kids.

“We always try to help the local schools. We have collected and prepared care kits for Coshocton Elementary in the past and we also donated to the elementary when they were in need of clothing in case of emergencies. We will be taking our tips for any services that day to help with the extra clothing for the elementary again,” said Char and Billie Valentine, owners of 6th Street Tattoo.

Tyler McKee, owner of McKee’s Mancave Barbershop, said, “Many people see barbering as simply cutting hair, but I think our vision is much more than a haircut. We are able to send these kids to school with confidence knowing they have a great haircut. This event is a way for our barbershops to come together and show that no matter what logo is on the door, our community comes first and when we work together to better the community, everyone benefits.”

Wild Styles Hair Studio owner Stephanie Sharrock said, “I think what Locals decided to do was so great and thoughtful and I wanted to be a part of it and be able to give back to the community that has supported me and my business for seven years.”

Wild Styles will be offering simple quick trims and mini nail polishes. Sharrock asks that no one request a certain stylist that day so they can keep everyone moving and be as efficient as possible. Pizza, chips and drinks will also be available.
