Fresno Farmers’ Market hosting Family Fun Day
FRESNO – Rolling countryside, fresh clean air, homegrown freshness, smiling faces, and farm-to-table goodness. That’s what the Fresno Farmers’ Market is made of. But what is farm-to-table all about? Well, here it is in a nutshell! Farm-to-table is knowing the “what, where and who” of your food. Simply put, the quality our growers and producers put into their products are the same qualities you as the consumer get out of them. The hands that plowed the fields, pulled the weeds, harvested the beans, kneaded the bread and rolled the pie dough, in short, are the same hands you get to shake come Saturday morning.
The satisfaction of knowing the care and timely effort that went into your farm-to-table experience, plus being able to put a face along with it, makes everything taste even that much better. Local produce that was picked at the break of dawn and set out for sale by 8 a.m. from less than three miles away, well, it doesn’t get much fresher or closer to the farm than that.
Not only is shopping at local farmers’ markets affordable and full of healthy benefits, it is a time to socialize. And that in itself is an art that is being lost, unfortunately, to social media these days. The social little butterfly in all of us is encouraged to sit and visit with new and old friends alike here in the heart of downtown Fresno. That is why once again the Fresno Farmers’ Market will be hosting the annual Family Fun Day on Saturday Aug. 1. There will be fabulous food and barbeque by Real McCoy’s BBQ, live music provided by the one and only Rod Bradford and local fiddle player Andy Pastor, as well as kid-friendly games for the entire family to enjoy. So mark your calendars for Aug. 1 and come be part of what farm-to-table is really all about.
Here is a recipe that is country at heart, and that will be sure to please.
Cabbage Steaks *Poor Man’s Ribeye*
1 or 2 large head(s) of fresh picked cabbage
1 large sweet candy onion
olive oil
3-4 cloves crushed garlic
salt & pepper to taste
Slice cabbage into large circles like a “steak”. Slice onion into rings. Arrange cabbage slices on baking sheet, and rub each cabbage slice with crushed garlic. Drizzle each “steak” with olive oil, and place onion rings on top of each other and season with salt & pepper to taste. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until tender.
The Fresno Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. – noon now until the end of October. For more information, call 740-545-0849 or 740-545-0997 anytime.
