Gibbs votes to protect life, prevent federal abortion funding

| January 25, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – The House approved legislation to permanently prevent federal funds from being used to pay for abortion and abortion coverage through programs like Medicaid. H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, replaces annual patchwork fixes that do not cover all programs and funding streams.

Notably, H.R. 7 also stops taxpayer dollars from funding subsidies for Obamacare health insurance plans. An independent report by the Government Accountability Office showed there were more than 1,000 health insurance plans sold on Obamacare exchanges which covered abortions and received taxpayer dollars in 2014.

After voting in favor of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement:

“As a Christian, a father, and a grandfather, I know how precious each and every life is. It is our responsibility to speak for and defend those who cannot speak for themselves. Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment has saved the lives of 2 million unborn children, preventing taxpayer dollars from being used to fund or provide abortions through Medicaid and other services. Unfortunately, Obamacare has circumvented the Hyde Amendment by directing taxpayer funds towards premium assistance for insurance plans that cover abortion. By expanding the Hyde Amendment’s reach and making it permanent, we can protect more lives from abortion and ensure taxpayers are in no way, directly or indirectly, financially responsible for abortion procedures. No American should be forced to violate their deeply-held personal beliefs, and H.R. 7 will make sure that does not happen.”
