Herbert Emil Carlfeldt
COSHOCTON– Herbert Emil Carlfeldt, 85, of S. 18th St., passed away Dec 12, 2013 at Coshocton Co. Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Chicago, IL on Nov 20, 1928 to Emil Gustaf Carlfeldt and Agnes Elizabeth (Blom) Carlfeldt. Upon finishing High School, Herb worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 4 years. He operated the boiler of a locomotive, manipulated the valves to control the flow of fuel to the firebox of the locomotive, and shoveled coal by hand into the firebox. On Aug. 14th, 1950 he joined the U.S. Air Force. There he was a Senior Installer/Cable man/Splicer in Germany and North Africa. He was honorably discharged Aug. 5, 1954. He was a Private and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Occupation Medal-Germany, and the Good Conduct Medal.
After his military service, he married Angela (DePrima) Carlfeldt and they raised 3 children, Mary Jo Wells, Anthony John Carlfeldt and Jennifer Ann Schoening. Mary Jo is married to Kim Wells and they have two children, Olivia and Adam, all living in the Warsaw area. Anthony is married to wife Leandra Carlfeldt and they have two children, Haley and Sam. They live in Cincinnati. Jennifer is married to husband Damon Schoening, and they reside in Indianapolis, IN.
For a time Herb worked as an Export Manager for the Florsheim Shoe Co. In 1976 he went to work for Columbus Line and retired from there as a District Sales Manager in 1991. He sold space for containers on steamships that mainly traveled to Australia.
In 2001 he and Angela moved to the Coshocton area to be near to their family. Angela passed away Nov. 25th, 2008. On April 2, 2011 he married Connie (Gephart) McConnell Carlfeldt, who survives. He is also survived by his children, grandchildren, step-children, Jill (Bob) Easter of Ocean Springs, MS, Diane (Bob) DeWitt of Coshocton, Tracy Moon of Gaffney, S.C. Lynn McConnell of Newark, Dr. Brad (Jan) McConnell Ft Worth, TX, Anne (Brett) Randles of Coshocton, Katie (Jeff) Barrick of Coshocton, ten step-grandchildren, one step-great granddaughter and his sister, Elizabeth Johnson of Northbrook, IL. He is predeceased by his parents and two brothers; Stan and Nils Carlfeldt.
Herb loved his family and his church. He was interested in world affairs and politics. He was a regular at the library and read the newspaper thoroughly every day. Doing the jumble and reading the comics came first, however. He enjoyed music, birds, flowers, word games, and spending time with good friends.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at Grace United Methodist Church. Friends and family will be received from10:00 a.m. until service time. There will be a lunch at the church following the service. It is requested that there be no flowers. Contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 422 Walnut St., Coshocton, OH 43812.
