Herman Eugene Via
Herman Eugene Via, a devoted father, husband and proud retired coal miner, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, in Oro Valley, Arizona. Born on August 3, 1935, in Pulaski, Virginia, Herman lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, and cherished passions.
Herman dedicated his career to the coal mining industry, embodying the resilience and determination that characterized his generation. His unwavering commitment to his work was matched by his dedication to community service. He was a proud member of the Three Rivers Masonic Lodge in Coshocton, Ohio, where he formed lasting bonds with others who shared his values of integrity and fellowship. Several of his achievements at the Lodge were being a member for 56 years, Past Master, and Past District Deputy Grand Master of the 19th Masonic District.
Herman shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Lois Genevieve Akers Via. Their enduring partnership was a testament to love and commitment. They are both survived by their two daughters: Teresa Jean Via McGuire spouse of David Eugene McGuire, and Karen Dawn Via. Grandchildren: Daniel Eugene McGuire spouse of Amanda Marie Evans McGuire, and Danielle Dawn Souder. Great grandchildren: Cale Eugene McGuire and Finnegan Abbott McGuire. He was also part of a large and loving family that included his wonderful parents, Hazel Melinda Kane Via and Robert James Via. His two brothers, James Douglas Via and Jack Donald Via, and four sisters: Ezma “Marie” Via Keesling, Betty Dawn Via Bratton, Doris Fay Via, and Bonnie Jean Via Matherly spouse of Roger B. Matherly.
A man of simple joys, Herman had a deep admiration for John Wayne, loved to EAT, and was an enthusiastic fan of Ohio State football. These passions brought him happiness and connected him with others who shared his interests.
Herman’s legacy is one of dedication to his family, community, and the values he held dear. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
