COSHOCTON – When no one else wanted to come to Coshocton for a job, Jim Marcentile stepped up and took the assignment. He ended up liking it so much here that he relocated his family from Avon Lake and started his own business.

Marcentile opened James Plumbing Ltd. on Aug. 17, 1979 and recently celebrated his 40th anniversary. He picked up the plumbing trade after being laid off from working in the aircraft industry.

“The (Vietnam) war had ended and they did layoffs,” Marcentile said. “I was told I’d get called back, but I don’t like sitting around. I like the independence and that you can be in a different spot every day. There were no more boring eight to 12 hour days standing in the same spot.”

He started James Plumbing, Ltd. on the other side of the duplex his family lived in near the current fire station. People quickly accepted him and by the late 1980s he moved the business to County Road 16.

When asked what made the business work, Marcentile’s answer was simple, “Determination.”

“I didn’t know anyone when we first moved here and I had used my money to my tools and the duplex,” he said. “My grandpa always asked two questions. What do you want and what are you willing to do to obtain it.? I wanted it all and I was willing to do whatever it took.”

Marcentile also has gotten involved in area communities. He is currently on Coshocton’s tree commission and board of zoning appeals and is Guernsey County’s plumbing inspector and plans examiner.

“I want to give back to the people who have been good to me,” Marcentile said.

He also is excited to have his son CJ working with him.

“He was the only one of the kids that was ever interested,” Jim said. “I remember putting him in a playpen and he never wanted the toys. He’d rather play with plumbing fittings.”

James Plumbing, Ltd. can handle any project form a drippy faucet to plumbing an apartment complex.

“If it has water running through it we can do it and everything we do is by code,” Jim said.

With CJ being involved in the business, Jim sees James Plumbing providing quality services for another 40 years.

“We care about what we do,” Jim said. “We don’t leave things a mess. If we came in and fixed something we are going to clean up after ourselves.”

James Plumbing is located at 2689 CR 16 and can be reached at 740-622-6862.
