Joseph James Uher

| August 10, 2022

Joseph James Uher, 89, of Fresno, passed away on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022. He was born on April 6, 1933, in Canal Lewisville to the late Joseph and Gladys (Milligan) Uher.

Joe graduated from Keene High School in 1951. He truly enjoyed the education, athletics and social events that the small school had to offer. He married Norma Welling, one of the top academic girls in the class. Joe always told his children that he himself graduated in the top 10…although only 12 – 15 were in the graduating class!

He then went on to graduate from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture. After college, Joe worked for Frontier Power Company his entire career, ending as General Manager before retiring in 1991 with 37 years of service.

Joe enjoyed raising his family on the 80 acre farm while teaching his kids about hard work and country living. He enjoyed being a leader in the community. His interests were being a lifelong member of Park United Methodist Church and later attended Keene United Methodist Church. He was a member of Rotary International, served on the River View School Board for over 20 years and was on the board of Camp Echoing Hills. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau, Keene Grange, 4-H, FFA, and enjoyed competing at the local fair. He was a collector of many things, mostly from garage sales, loving the thrill of getting a good deal.

His passion for fishing is like no other! He went to Canada for 65 years up until COVID. If you are curious as to how many fish he has caught, he has logged a yearly journal by number and type of fish. He also enjoyed playing cards and was part of the Sam’s Camping Club. Joe had a heart of giving and his generosity was greatly appreciated.

He nurtured and cared for many people, friends and family who became a precious part of the Uher extended family. He will truly be missed by everyone that knew him.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Catherine (Berry) Wegener Uher; his children, David (Polly) Uher of Matthews, NC, Karen (Mike) Lombardo of Canal Winchester, OH, Judy (Mark) Douglas of Pueblo, CO, Daniel (Jan) Uher of Alexandria, KY, Douglas (Lynn) Uher of Graytown, OH and Cathy’s children, Cheryl (Wade) Velasquez of Ft. Myers, FL, Michael (Brenda) Wegener of Coshocton, Jody (Dave) Overholt of Granville, OH, Gus (Kelly) Wegener of Cincinnati and Chuck (Angie) Wegener of Warsaw.  Together they enjoyed their 24 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his first wife, Norma of 61 ½ years who passed away in 2016, his sister, Dorothy Close, and granddaughter Angela Lombardo.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 from 10 a.m. to noon at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at noon officiated by Rev. Mark Douglas and Pastor David Uher.
